Germany’s economic outlook remains subdued: economic growth of 0.6% is currently forecast for 2026. Increasing pressure on public budgets can be expected, which is also likely to affect the funding of the Studierendenwerke.
The state subsidy provided by the State of Baden-Württemberg to Studierendenwerk Tübingen-Hohenheim will decrease from €3.451 million to €3.312 million starting next year. At the same time, personnel, operating, and construction costs continue to rise. Delays in construction projects, such as the refurbishment of the Reutlingen refectory (scheduled to become operational in 2027), are creating additional financial pressure.
Despite these challenges, important opportunities are emerging. Through the federal-state funding program “Junges Wohnen” (Young Housing), additional investment funds are available to the Studierendenwerk for the development of student housing. In 2025, €1.0 million was already secured under this program, and a further €2.0 million has been committed for 2026.
Digitalization initiatives in student housing and campus dining services, together with the ongoing reorganization of the BAföG Office, are improving operational efficiency. These measures will help safeguard the Studierendenwerk’s long-term financial stability and enable it to continue developing its services for students, even under challenging conditions.
