Together against the flood of disposables
The Studierendenwerk Tübingen-Hohenheim will stop using disposable packaging in its canteens and cafeterias from 01.01.2022.
The University City of Tübingen is introducing a new packaging tax on January 1, 2022 to counteract the consumption of disposable packaging.
This decision also has far-reaching consequences for the refectories and cafeterias of the Studierendenwerk. Here, an additional tax would apply in the future for to-go packaging in the dining halls or disposable hot beverage cups in the cafeteria.
The Studierendenwerk has decided not to simply pass on these costs to its guests. For reasons of sustainability, a consistent waste avoidance strategy is planned in all facilities from January 2022. Disposable packaging will thus be a thing of the past.
In detail, this means the following changes:
- Food and beverages can continue to be consumed on site as usual using Studierendenwerk tableware
- No deposit will be charged on the dishes (plates, cups, etc.) – however, we ask that they be returned with care!
- For to-go consumption, bringing your own containers (boxes, hot beverage cups, etc.) is expressly permitted and encouraged.
- In addition, reusable cups (KeepCups) are available for purchase in our cafeterias
“We want to avoid that students are additionally burdened by price increases in these difficult times” explains Oliver Schill, Managing Director of Studierendenwerk Tübingen-Hohenheim “Therefore, we have decided to completely eliminate disposable packaging from our range right away. In the future, we will also establish this sustainable concept in other facilities outside of Tübingen.” At the Hohenheim, Reutlingen, Albstadt, Sigmaringen, Nürtingen and Trossingen – where the packaging tax from Tübingen does not actually apply – disposable packaging will therefore also gradually disappear from the salesrooms. Here, however, implementation will take place at a somewhat later date.
