The Studierendenwerk Tübingen-Hohenheim operates ten canteens and thirteen cafeterias at 13 locations. With almost 1.3 million meals served, students and university staff were provided with affordable catering close to campus in 2024.
With the reopening of the renovated Wilhelmstraße cafeteria, sales in university catering rose significantly, growing by 5.3% to €8,600k. Due to high personnel, energy and cleaning costs, the division posted an overall deficit of €8,970k. Part of the vending machine business was transferred to the service provider ‘Süße Oase’ in 2024.
The renovation of the Reutlingen canteen continued during the reporting year. The reopening is planned for 2027.

On 26 July 2024, after five years, the last meals were served at the Shedhalle interim canteen. The menu featured popular canteen classics such as lentils with spaetzle, cheese spaetzle, currywurst, schnitzel and Maultaschen with potato salad. Many students stopped by, presented the staff with flowers and expressed their appreciation in a variety of ways. The public relations team accompanied the farewell from the building with creative activities.

“After five years, the students had become so accustomed to the Shedhalle cafeteria that they did not want to leave. Some of them mourned on the spot, so to speak.”
After a five-year renovation phase, the Studierendenwerk Tübingen-Hohenheim reopened the listed Wilhelmstraße cafeteria on 30 September 2024. Designed by Berlin architect Paul Baumgarten in the 1960s, the building has been modernised and sustainably redesigned in accordance with heritage protection guidelines. Operations initially started with a reduced offering (‘soft opening’). With up to 3,100 meals a day, over 1,000 seats and a new free-flow area, the cafeteria now offers contemporary, affordable catering and a campus-oriented student life, even during lunch breaks. The cafeteria on the ground floor with access to the newly designed outdoor area complements the offering. The opening week in October 2024 offered students a varied programme of culinary events, music and competitions. In November 2024, the cafeteria was officially handed over in the presence of Petra Olschowski, Minister of Science, Research and the Arts, other representatives of the state of Baden-Württemberg, the University of Tübingen and numerous other guests.

Management Canteen Wilhelmstraße
I took over management of the Wilhelmstraße canteen from my predecessor, Rudi Gaiser, at the beginning of 2025. He ran the establishment with great passion and dedication.
For decades, the cafeteria in the clubhouse was a hub of student life, offering snacks, coffee, cultural events and an inviting garden area. In July 2024, the Tübingen-Hohenheim Student Services Association closed the cafeteria and handed over the premises to the University of Tübingen Student Union. Since September 2024, the cafeteria at the Wilhemstraße canteen has been inviting visitors to linger with its balanced menu.
