Following the completion of several renovation projects, a total of 5,910 residential units were available in 2024, 44 more than in the previous year. However, demand once again significantly exceeded supply: 12,151 students applied for a place, and 4,336 were accepted. Summer school guests and Erasmus students were also offered accommodation for their relatively short study visits. Together with the Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts (MWK), the student union once again called on private landlords to provide additional accommodation for students.
Cost increases for renovations and rising energy, cleaning and personnel costs will lead to moderate rent increases in 2024. Fortunately, the vacancy rate in 2024 was once again very low at 1.4%.
The renovation of the student residence at Schwerzstraße 2 and 3 in Stuttgart-Hohenheim was successfully completed in April 2024. The work included a complete modernisation of the interior, new furniture for all rooms and the installation of a new heat pump for efficient and sustainable energy supply. The shared flats now offer more privacy and comfort: instead of 18 students per floor, smaller groups now live together and benefit from a pleasant social environment.
The building permit and funding approval for the federal-state programme ‘Junges Wohnen’ (Young Living) have now been granted for the planned new hall of residence at Fruwirthstraße 15–19 in Stuttgart-Hohenheim. Construction of the 126 new residential units began in August 2025 and is being subsidised with €6,930,000.
Through the online plattform at my-stuwe.de, the student services organisation arranged 63 private rooms as additional accommodation in Tübingen, Reutlingen, Rottenburg, Albstadt and Sigmaringen. This represents a decrease of 8% compared to the previous year.
Since 2024, virtual room tours have allowed interested parties to take a look behind the doors of various halls of residence rooms. The digital room tours are conducted by students, who also provide personal insights into their everyday life and studies. This has resulted in authentic social media clips about life in the student halls of residence and the rooms offered by the Studierendenwerk Tübingen-Hohenheim Association.
