BAföG Info Point & Legal Advisory Service Relocating

BAföG InfoPoint Wilhelmstraße

From February 2026, the Studierendenwerk will once again offer its advisory services closer to students. The BAföG InfoPoint is moving from its temporary location in Keplerstraße back to the Wilhelmstraße campus.

Due to the relocation, the BAföG InfoPoint will be closed from 26 to 2. February 2026.

The BAföG InfoPoint will reopen on 3 February 2026 at its new location at Wilhelmstraße 19, room 019. Students can visit during the following times:

Monday: 10:00–11:30 a.m. and 1:00–3:00 p.m.
Tuesday: 10:00–11:30 a.m.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          Wednesday: 08:30 a.m.- 12.30 p.m.

The BAföG InfoPoint provides advice on general BAföG-related questions, submission of documents, and BAföG applications. Please note that questions regarding the status of individual applications cannot be answered.

The legal advice service offered by our lawyer Sabine Gehweiler will also be located in room 019. From March 2026 onwards, consultations will take place exclusively on Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and on Fridays from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.

With the new location, both advisory services are once again easily accessible and closely connected to everyday student life.

Reintroduction of In-Person BAföG Consultation Hours

Good news for all BAföG applicants: With immediate effect, the BAföG office at Listplatz (for applications within the country) in Reutlingen is once again offering personal consultation hours – in addition to telephone counselling. This is an important step by the Studierendenwerk towards improving communication with students and shortening processing times in the long term.

In-person consultations usually take place on Tuesdays from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm. Each consultation slot lasts 20 minutes. Appointments can be conveniently booked online via the electronic booking system. Only a few details are required for the booking, which are of course encrypted and transmitted securely.

If you would like to cancel an appointment booked online, please contact our InfoPoint (phone: 07121 / 68088-0) or send us an email to bafoeg [at] sw-tuebingen-hohenheim [dot] de in good time. An early cancellation helps us to pass on the appointment to other students and thus shorten the waiting times for everyone.

How to speed up your BAföG application

Currently, the very high number of BAföG applications exceeds our staff capacity, so that processing takes considerably longer. We have therefore taken numerous internal measures to speed up the processing of applications.

You can also help to speed up the processing:

  • Please refrain from asking questions about the status or completeness of the application, as these take up valuable processing time. Don’t worry – if any documents are missing, we will contact you.
  • Do not submit documents more than once and in different ways. We accept documents via BAföGDigital, by post or email (attachments only in jpg or pdf format. Zip files or links are not possible). No channel of receipt is preferred. Applications are processed chronologically according to the date of receipt.
  • Please do not send us the original documents, as they are time-consuming to sort out and return.
  • Find out in advance here about all the necessary documents and answers to numerous questions on the subject of BAföG.

Important change in BAföG office hours

Unfortunately, our case workers in the BAföG office are currently barely keeping up with the work due to the high volume of applications. Some applications are taking much longer to process than usual. We apologise for this.

In order to speed up the processing time, we have to temporarily restrict our telephone consultation hours. From now on, you can only reach your case worker on Tuesdays from 9.00 a.m. to 11.00 a.m. and on Wednesdays from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

For general information, you can still use the telephone hotline of the InfoPoint (07121 / 68088-0) or the free hotline of the Federal Government. The hotline can be reached at 0800-223 63 41 from Monday to Thursday from 8.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. and on Fridays from 8.00 a.m. to 4.30 p.m.

We are currently receiving many messages from students asking about the status of their BAföG application. Unfortunately, processing is currently taking much longer than usual. We apologise for this.

In order for our colleagues in the BAföG Office to be able to concentrate more on processing applications and to reduce waiting times, we have decided to temporarily restrict our telephone consultation hours. Therefore, the appointments on Monday and Thursday have to be cancelled until the end of April 2023. On Tuesday, the case workers will be available as usual from 9-11 a.m. and on Wednesday from 1.30 p.m. to 3.30 p.m. Thank you for your understanding!

Higher BAföG payments in October

In October, many BAföG recipients were able to look forward to more money thanks to the heating allowance and the 27th Amendment Act.

Many BAföG recipients were able to look forward to more money at the end of October. The reasons for the higher financial support are, on the one hand, the 27th Amendment Act, which brought with it a significant increase in the need rates, and on the other hand, the payment of the first heating allowance.

Some students are unsure about the higher transfer and are currently trying to enquire about the funding amount at the BAföG Office, as they have not yet received a notice of change. However, this will be sent by post in the next few weeks. Until then, please refrain from making enquiries by phone at the BAföG office or with the person in charge, thank you!

Bundestag passes 27th BAföG amendment

On June 23, the 27th BAföG Amendment Act was passed in the Bundestag. A number of changes will come into force in the winter semester 2022/23, thanks to which BAföG recipients will receive more money in the future. The number of students entitled to BAföG will also increase.

With the law, support under BAföG is now to be opened up again to significantly broader sections of the population. The amendment provides for a 5.75 percent increase in the requirement rates due to the rising cost of living – originally, an increase of five percent was planned. The allowances for BAföG recipients are also now to rise by 20.75 percent instead of 20 percent. It is planned that the new regulations will come into force at the start of the winter semester 2022/23.

New responsibilities in the area of BAföG

Due to an internal restructuring, the BAföG office at Hohenheim has been moved to Reutlingen. All applications are now processed centrally by our colleagues in the Head BAföG Office (Listplatz 1).

Please note that since the outbreak of the pandemic, more and more enquiries have been coming in to the BAföG office. The processing time may therefore be delayed – we ask for your understanding. Our team at the BAföG office is doing everything in its power to process the incoming applications as quickly as possible. Please try to refrain from asking questions about the processing status of your application, as this costs our staff additional time.
