Rent adjustment as of 01 October 2024

Housing
Einzug in ein Wohnheim

The Studierendenwerk Tübingen-Hohenheim will increase rents for dormitories by an average of 5% from 1 October 2024. This is the first rent increase in over four years. The adjustment will only apply to new contracts; existing tenants will not be affected.

Edith Hein, Managing Director of the Studierendenwerk, explains: “We are aware of the financial burden on many students. For this reason, we have not increased rents in recent years. The partly massive price increases for energy and cleaning, among other things, make a moderate increase unavoidable”. She adds: “Our aim is still to offer socially acceptable housing for students. We remain by far the most affordable landlord for students.”

Elsewhere, however, the Studierendenwerk is keeping prices stable. In the winter semester 2024/2025, the semester fee will remain comparatively low at around €56. On average across Germany, students have to pay €78 as a student union fee. Many student unions in Germany have recently raised their fees significantly.

Renovation of Schwerzstrasse 2 and 3 hall of residence completed

Hinweis

There are currently still many rooms available in the newly renovated hall of residence! If you are interested, simply send a short e-mail to our hall of residence administration in Hohenheim (info [dot] hoh [at] sw-tuebingen-hohenheim [dot] de). You can also move in at short notice during the current summer semester.

Over the past 11 months, the Studierendenwerk has extensively renovated the student hall of residence at Schwerzstr. 2 in Stuttgart-Hohenheim. Since 1 April, the building can finally be rented out to students again.

The refurbishment included a complete modernisation of the interior and the refurnishing of all rooms. A new heat pump was also installed to ensure an efficient and sustainable energy supply. Another improvement concerns the size of the shared flats: Previously, 18 students lived together on one floor here, but smaller groups have now been formed to offer residents more privacy and comfort.

Interested students can only live together in shared flats here; there are no furnished individual flats. The average rent is between 295 and 325 euros, depending on the size of the room.

New hall of residence in Reutlingen completed

Housing
Wohnheim Pestalozzistraße 67

Affordable living and studying close to campus. This is made possible by 107 new dormitory places at Reutlingen University.

Reutlingen. The Studierendenwerk’s new building at Pestalozzistr. 67 is ready for occupancy just in time for the start of the 2023 summer semester – 107 students have been able to move into their new homes since March 1.

“The housing situation for students remains tight even after the end of the Corona Pandemic,” explains Oliver Schill, Managing Director of Studierendenwerk Tübingen-Hohenheim. “We are therefore pleased to be able to significantly expand the offer at the Reutlingen campus with 107 additional dormitory places.”

The newly constructed building houses 69 single apartments and another 36 places in 6-person shared apartments. Here, the rent is expected to be 345 euros for a shared room and 374 euros warm rent for a single apartment. On the first floor, two additional single apartments have been designed as barrier-free living options.

The single apartments are comparatively spacious at 16.5 m² and are equipped with a small kitchenette and their own sanitary facilities (shower, washbasin, WC). The shared living areas have approx. 15m² single rooms as well as a large communal kitchen and two sanitary cells. All rooms are furnished and equipped with media connections. The interiors are designed entirely in white to give the residents maximum freedom in the individual design of their home.

The 3115 square feet of usable space includes covered outdoor bicycle parking as well as 55 secure indoor parking spaces. All residents can also use the building’s own drying and laundry room.

In planning the building, the architects responsible, Hank+Hirth from Eningen unter Achalm, placed great emphasis on sustainability and exploited synergy effects. The four-story L-building is located in the immediate vicinity of the residential complex already completed in 2015/2016. This means that the new residents can share the common rooms in the neighboring buildings. The residential building is also designed as a KfW Efficiency House 40 and is connected to the district heating network of the city of Reutlingen. A high-performance photovoltaic system with a maximum output of around 28 KWp was installed on the roof.

The Studierendenwerk Tübingen-Hohenheim invested around 8.5 million euros in the new building. The state of Baden-Württemberg provided a subsidy of about 856,000 euros – about 8,000 euros per newly created dormitory place. This means that a total of 399 dormitory places are now available in Reutlingen.

Stuwe reacts to serious knife attack in hall of residence

Housing
Wohnheim Schelmenwasen

The Studierendenwerk Tübingen-Hohenheim has reacted with great dismay to the knife attack in the Schelmenwasen hall of residence, in which three people were injured, some of them seriously, in Nürtingen at the weekend. Our thoughts are with the injured students and we wish them a quick and complete recovery!

Understandably, all residents of the hall of residence have a growing need for safety after the tragic incident at the weekend. Therefore, the Studierendenwerk, together with the Nürtingen-Geislingen University of Applied Sciences, will do everything in its power to ensure that the students can feel safe in their home again.

In a personal meeting on Monday, Managing Director Oliver Schill and HfWU Rector Professor Dr. Andreas Frey discussed further security measures. Since Saturday, the building has been guarded around the clock by a security service. This special protection will now be maintained in the coming weeks. The management will also take a look at the situation for themselves at a meeting on Thursday. The Studierendenwerk also assures that all doors in the building are fully functional and lockable and are regularly checked by our caretaker! It is therefore not possible for strangers to enter the building without a key.

Our hall of residence administration is currently examining the extent to which further protective measures, such as adjusting the lighting situation, are possible. Furthermore, our team at the psychotherapeutic counselling centre is open to all residents who are still in shock after the tragic events.

Studierendenwerk launches energy saving campaign

Housing
Energiesparkampagne

In order to motivate dormitory residents to save energy, the Studierendenwerk is launching an advertising campaign.

“Flip the Switch”, in the student dormitory and in the mind: The Studierendenwerk Tübingen-Hohenheim, together with its umbrella organisation, the German Student Union (DSW), is launching a large-scale energy-saving campaign for the approximately 6,000 students who live in the dormitories in the university region.

In view of the energy crisis and the drastic increase in energy prices in Germany, many students are facing financial hardship this autumn. The galloping prices hit this low-income group particularly hard.

“We want to motivate people to actively save energy. We are thinking primarily of the residents of our halls of residence, because this is where the greatest savings potential lies through the students themselves,” explains Oliver Schill, Managing Director of the Studierendenwerk Tübingen-Hohenheim. “We hope for a change in awareness and behaviour, i.e. to be able to flip the switch in our heads to get through the crisis well together.”

The core aspect of the campaign will be a social media challenge. Under the hashtag #myenergchallenge, students can challenge each other to energy-saving challenges, document them and also post them on social networks. This could be, for example, a challenge to take a cold shower, to permanently turn down the room temperature or to refrain from blow-drying your hair.

In addition, there are short information brochures, posters, digital info screens and the informative website www.myenergychallenge.de, which is available in several languages.

Application stop for our halls of residence

Housing
Bewerbungsstopp

The allocation of rooms for the winter semester 2022/23 in our halls of residence has been almost completed. Only at Geislingen and Albstadt are a few places still available.

Unfortunately, we can no longer accept new applications for the following locations:

  • Tübingen
  • Hohenheim
  • Reutlingen
  • Nürtingen
  • Sigmaringen
  • Rottenburg

There are already long waiting lists for all halls of residence. For those who are still looking for an affordable roof over their heads, here are a few tips and alternatives that might be worthwhile:

Private room accomodation
Private landlords can post offers for students on the free private room accomodation.

Halls of residence by other organisations
In Tübingen, other providers, e.g. the churches or private providers, run other halls of residence. Other room exchanges or newspaper advertisements can also help you find a suitable roof over your head. A list can be found here on our website.

Increase your search radius
We also advise you not to only search directly in the university town. With the respective Studi-Ticket and the Anschluss-Studiticket, it is possible to commute inexpensively between your place of study and your flat. Rental prices and offers are usually more attractive outside the university towns and the competition is not as high.

Short-term alternatives
If time is running out and you still don’t have a flat in sight, there are also some cheap accommodation options, such as youth hostels, that can tide you over for a few days.
