Familiar Counselling Service, New Name
The counselling centre of the Studierendenwerk Tübingen-Hohenheim is moving to new premises at Österbergstraße 1 in Tübingen. As a result, the office can now be reached at a new telephone number: +49 (0)7071 297 3750.
Please note: Due to the relocation, the counselling centre may be temporarily available only to a limited extent during the week of 8–12 June. We appreciate your understanding.
As part of the move, the former Psychotherapeutic Counselling Service will also be renamed and will henceforth be known as the Psychological Counselling Service.
Why the change?
With the new name, we would like to communicate more clearly what our service offers. The previous name, Psychotherapeutic Counselling Service, may have created the impression that our counselling service is similar to psychotherapy. In fact, the two services differ considerably. Last year, students attended fewer than three counselling sessions on average. By comparison, even short-term psychotherapy typically comprises up to 24 sessions. In addition, appointments in our counselling service are usually spaced much further apart than in psychotherapeutic treatment.
At the same time, we would like to highlight the low-threshold and easily accessible nature of our service. The Psychological Counselling Service is aimed at students seeking support with psychological, personal, or study-related challenges—often before psychotherapeutic treatment becomes necessary. In fact, nearly two-thirds of our clients do not meet the criteria for psychotherapy. They benefit from a free, professional support service tailored specifically to the needs of students. In this way, our counselling service also plays an important preventive role and encourages students to seek support at an early stage, before difficulties become more severe.
The renaming will not affect the service itself. The scope, content, and overall approach of the service remain unchanged.
