The Studierendenwerk

Studierendenwerk Tübingen-Hohenheim plays a key role in shaping the study conditions of around 52,000 students at seven higher education institutions across nine locations. As one of 57 Studierendenwerke in Germany, it serves an exceptionally large and geographically dispersed university region: the distance between the two most distant locations is approximately 170 kilometres, equivalent to around two hours of travel time.

Through its services in the areas of campus dining, student housing, student financial aid, counselling, and childcare, Studierendenwerk Tübingen-Hohenheim provides reliable support for students throughout their academic journey.

Boards and Members

Pursuant to Section 4 of the Studierendenwerk Act (Studierendenwerksgesetz – StWG), Studierendenwerk Tübingen-Hohenheim, as a public-law institution, has three governing bodies: the Representative Assembly, the Administrative Board, and the Managing Director. In accordance with Section 13 (1) StWG, it is also subject to legal supervision by the Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts Baden-Württemberg.

Responsibilities and Student Numbers

The number of students served declined by 1.4% compared with the previous year, reaching 51,622 students in the 2025/26 winter semester (2024/25 winter semester: 52,334).

Almost all universities and higher education institutions recorded a decrease in student numbers. Only Reutlingen University and Nürtingen-Geislingen University of Applied Science experienced a slight increase in enrolment.

Semester Fee Increased to Maintain Services

A key source of funding for the Studierendenwerk is the semester contribution paid by students. Additional revenue is generated through campus dining services and student housing, as well as through state funding and financial assistance provided by the State of Baden-Württemberg. For the 2025 summer semester, the Studierendenwerk contribution was adjusted for the first time since 2018. This adjustment was made in response to significant cost increases, particularly for energy, personnel, services, and operating materials. Despite stagnant state subsidies, the increase enables the Studierendenwerk to maintain its existing services for students reliably and at a consistently high quality. The semester contribution currently ranges from €58.60 to €79.00 and therefore remains well below the national average of €91.53.

A Strong Team for Strong Study Conditions

In 2025, the Studierendenwerk team grew significantly: on average, 358 people were employed during the year (previous year: 337). As of 31 December 2025, 360 employees were working at the Studierendenwerk. In addition to increased staffing needs in campus dining, key administrative positions that had been vacant for some time were filled again.

With an average length of service of more than twelve years, employee retention remained at a high level. This underlines the attractiveness of Studierendenwerk Tübingen-Hohenheim as an employer. In the past year, people from 27 nationalities worked at the Studierendenwerk.

The share of female staff was around 70% in 2025. Their strong presence was also reflected at management level: 23 leadership positions were held by women in 2025.

The quota of employees with severe disabilities increased to 8.64%.

Sustainability Gets
Moving

With the creation and appointment of a Sustainability Manager position, the Studierendenwerk strategically embedded its environmental responsibility within the organization in 2025. The first greenhouse gas inventory was completed, and preparations were made for joining the state-wide sustainability initiative “Klimawin BW”.

Sustainability also became an integral part of everyday operations during the past year: since autumn 2025, e-bikes have been available to support climate-friendly mobility between locations. The development of a comprehensive sustainable mobility concept will continue in 2026.

Meeting Offline,

In its communications activities, the Studierendenwerk placed a stronger emphasis on direct interaction in 2025. At first-year student fairs and promotional events, the team provided information about the Studierendenwerk’s services and engaged personally with students.

New participatory formats encouraged students to get involved directly. As part of a recipe competition, students from all locations were invited to submit their favourite meat-free dishes, contributing ideas for a more sustainable refectory menu.

An increasing number of students are also turning to online channels for information about the Studierendenwerk’s news and services. In the past year, the Studierendenwerk’s Instagram community surpassed 5,000 followers for the first time.
